Hello everyone, thanks in advance for any responses. I am coaching high school outdoor track for the first time in some time and was wondering how other coaches break down a 12 week season. I am mainly interested in the 2 Mile/Mile group. I have a good group of kids who ran indoor, but they did a lot of races and their mileage at the end of the season was extremely low.
Currently I am thinking of breaking it down like this:
Base Phase (4 weeks): Emphasis on building up mileage, tempo runs/cruise intervals, and long runs. Basically one tempo-ish workout a week, one hill workout, a long run, and a lot of strides.
Pre-Competition Phase (4 weeks): Emphasis on maintaining mileage but also integrating some more race-paced work. Basically one faster workout a week, one tempo workout a week, and a long run. We also start having dual meets during this period
Competition Phase: Emphasis on racing with a slight reduction in mileage. Try to get in a tempo run here and there, but mainly focus on sharpening up. Will keep the long runs for the ST-type athletes who need them.
Would like my top 4 kids to run about 8 races in total (including doubling, i.e. they will probably run a 2 mile/4x800 double at the league meet).
Obviously this is extremely broad, but any thoughts? Really just looking to open up a dialogue as to how to structure workouts in a fairly short amount of time.
