My dad did work for Wilson Sporting Goods when I was 5 and they signed McEnroe and went to a dinner with him. Of course I turned that around and thought my dad signed John McEnroe until I asked him about it in the last year.
My mom was the most into tennis in the family. I played tennis 3 years of high school until I did track my senior year. We did belong to a tennis club but not a golf club. Too expensive for my dad.
Do I still qualify as a country club kid? The tennis membership was slumming it compared to the golf clubs in DFW.
I was the best player in my grade in HS at a school that was a Texas power. That being said, for some reason my grade sucked so senior year we didn't even get to play # 2 doubles in the private school state meet (although we should have as we beat the team of freshman they selected over us- we played them and were up like 7-2 in a pro set and then nearly blew it and won like 9-7).
In middle school, in doubles, my team beat a rival doubles team with like 2 top 10 in the state players. I'm pretty good a doubles strategy but pretty much just stayed out of my partner's way as the 3 other guys on the court were amazing. The other team got irate that somehow we were not getting obliterated as they realized I wasn't nearly as good as them (all top ranked).
I'm a competitive MFer.
I don't remember weldon playing tennis. I did track frosh year but got hurt.
