I am a young adult female, formerly (semi) competitive but now recreational runner. I am just getting back into running after the winter. I did not train very hard in the fall for personal reasons, and I usually take winters off to ski and cross train (I find it's best for my body). However, I have been feeling increasingly sluggish and I am having trouble getting back into running consistently, which I have never had trouble with before. I have been tested for thyroid in the past (have gone through brief periods of feeling like this, but attributed it to stress--and it has never been this bad or this prolonged) but have always tested completely normal. Anyway, here are some of my symptoms:
--constipation and feeling as though it takes things a long time to move through my system
--unexplained weight gain. I used to hover between 112-114 pounds no matter what I ate, and have recently shot up to ~135. I do not feel this is a healthy weight for my body type, but I also feel like I am retaining a lot of fluid.
--reduction in appetite
--swollen neck/face for about 3 months. it's not drastic enough to get comments, but I can physically feel it and see the difference in my face in the mirror.
--trouble swallowing (not pain, but it feels like my throat is kind of constricted or there's a "lump"
--swollen eyelids
--fatigue if I get less than 8-9 hrs of sleep a night. I am fine if I do, but when I don't I feel terrible the whole next day.
--trouble staying asleep / waking up throughout the night
--random spurts of anxiety that seem to come on if I a) do not sleep enough, or b) eat foods too high in sugar or fat
--mild depression
--irregular menstrual cycles
I am going into the doctor tomorrow to get tested, but as nothing has shown up in the past I am worried all signs will point to it being "just stress". I am going through some stress, but have never had these symptoms before, so I have the nagging feeling something is wrong with me. Does this sound like a thyroid problem, or could it be something else?
Thank you.
