nice article - actually got the mc we know in words.
Had no idea that Alberto won an Ultra in the early 90's too.
ugh, really? how about (just like he said) he watched her run and was interested in coaching her?
"When Cain’s mother realized the caller truly was Salazar, she felt profound relief. The Cains are practicing Catholics, as is Salazar. Had God sent Salazar their way?"

the heck is wrong with you? Do you have absolutely zero understanding of human behavior? read a freaking book sometime.

Exactly which book is that?
Actually, it was the early '90s, not 90's.

Yes, I thought it was a great article.
Two questions:
When MC was a junior, the article mentioned she would go to practice and the coach did not give her any workouts, she basically trained on her own. First I heard of this and it is hard to believe. I don't think it went down that way.
Article talks about Tim Noakes' "Central governor", like it is a proven theory. Is it?
As a fellow NYer, I am a big fan of MC and wish her the best.
Comrades.
He also undertook a pilgrimage to Yugoslavia to try and deal with his depression.
Dick Beardsley became a prescription med addict.
Read Duel in the Sun.

This part of the article nauseated me as well. Why do religious people - or people who aren't religious, for that matter - constantly feel the need to express these types of things. To each his own when it comes to spirituality and/or superstition, but keep it to yourself.
Did Salazar really call up her mother and start going on about her form and chicken wing running style right off?
The article referenced that it was when she moved back to the girls program that the coach wouldn't give her workouts. Jim MItchell is an extremely well respected high school coach and has produced many state and national champions at Bronxville HS. Sounds strange that he would be ignoring MC and not giving her workouts.
Don't see it in today's paper. I hope it's in the paper tomorrow. I would hate if they did such a great article only to put it online only.

I agree with this 100%. Jim Mitchell has been coaching girls xc/track for over twenty years and has experienced a lot of success. While Mary Cain was probably the most talented young lady to come through the program, I highly doubt Jim Mitchell did nothing and provided no guidance.

I have no knowledge of the situation, but I could easily see a situation where an experienced coach was being 'advised' by so many people and having his workouts for MC second guessed, that he washed his hands of the whole thing. Again, just saying I could easily see this happening - I don't know what really happened.
Nothing new!
(Unless you call Al's prediction she'll run 3:52 someday "new"!)
How about explaining why she didn't run USATF, and ran poorly all indoor season?
How about telling us if she's going to marry Benito, and why she's going with a younger man?
How about telling us her racing schedule for this year?
Like I said, nothing new!
The article reads like a diligently researched piece by someone who doesn't have a clue about running.
It's a bit like Laura Hillenbrand writes.

As runners, we ought to be happy Hillenbrand even bothered to write about Zamperini's athletic career.
The article's more of the same, not badly written but we have seen all this so many times before. What it might have added was certainly something like an explanation for why her performances have been so far beneath her level for much of the past year. It would not be in the daily paper, since it says NY Times Magazine, which comes out on Sundays.
