After neutering/spaying a cat or dog is it not standard procedure to put the "cone of shame" on while the animal is still anesthetized? I had my cat spayed today and the vet sent me home with a cone to put on later. Before we got home she managed to rip out the stitches out of her wound and now I'm back at the vet. If this is standard procedure could someone explain it? It seems to me like this was a horrible decision on a lazy vet's part (especially at the absurd price I paid for this).
Out dog has had 2 operations for sure the 2nd time she was sent home with the cone for that exact reason. I don't know the exact timing of it all, but it should get the cone put on when(or likely before) it's awake enough to be able to rip out stitches
cat just had surgery for an abscess and they put the cone on before she woke up. so sad seeing her in the cone and she was really, really depressed.but i'm pretty sure it was necessary and i can't imagine us trying to get it on her. after 5 days (supposed to leave it on for 10) we d-coned her and she was the happiest cat in the world and while she bathed like a fiend, she didn't go ripping out her stitches.
the vet should not charge you for the restitching. they blew it.
