How bad on a scale of 1-10 (10-beer mile fail) will Flotrack f$$$ck this up?

They're going to serve beer. Let's hope the Brojos keep the local community organizers informed about the "binge drinking event" going on so they can shut it down again.
Portland is an ugly city
This is awesome. Thank you Flotrack for making track exciting, like it is in Europe. Meet Organizers take notice.
Awesome.
Not sure why anyone who supports track wouldn't get behind this. Of course, hearing more details about the vague ideas Flotrack is suggesting would be nice to know, but I'll be patient.
Glad to see Flotrack trying something to make track more exciting, and relevant to both the track geek and the lay fan. Hope it works out for them, hard to see how this could be bad for Track & Field.
hard to see how this could be bad for Track & Field.
Um, because drinking is no longer cool. Promoting binge drinking is just wrong. It's not the 70s anymore.

The current IAAF/usatf format isn't attracting an audience. So, do more of the same????
Maybe if they had a chardonnay or zima mile you would approve? One drink, 3oz of course!! And no live music. Attendees must sit quietly and take no photos because usatf owns the copyright. Yeah, you and your platonic friend will be there...
I'll be having fun elsewhere.
What do you think it is all about. What do you think? You people probably pay to watch a live video..right. They are gonna create their own real in shows. Money money money thats all its about.
Are there any Formula 1 tracks in Portland?
I'm guessing this will either take place at Lewis & Clark College, where the Portland Track Festival is held, or Lincoln HS track.
Over/under on number of elites seeking a qualifying time for WCs?
I put it at 0.5

Yes. Renting a facility is free. So is the liability insurance. The athletes should never have to pay to do an event someone else took the time and trouble to assemble. Ever.
Maybe you are unhappy it might not be shown on that site no one visits run by the federation? No doubt they'll issue DMCA takedowns anyway.
If you think money/access is the sport's problem, then you are wrong. The federation is the source of the grassroots problem.
#YoureWelcome
I like beer as much as any other American. I think beer would be welcome at most track meets. When I do attend meets, I try to sneak some in.
That said, it seems Flotrac seems to think that beer will attract throngs of fans, as if it is the only thing missing for the American public to embrace the sport. It's a much deeper issue that that, and Flotrac is naive to think they can fundamentally get interest with the general public with a few stunts. That said, it could be a cool event...but don't expect it to garner much attention outside of Flotrac. Flotrac, will, of course, promote the meet on the site, as they should do.
Being a Debby Downer by nature, this particular meet is likely to be a glorified last chance meet. Most stars will have their qualifiers, and won't race this close to the WC. From 800m-5,000m, the US will have a lot of folks who will have the A standard. If they don't, they will have a month in Europe to get. Best case, there may be a women's 10k runner who needs a mark. In similar situations, a late track 10k is a glorified time trial. On the upside, maybe it's a low key chance to get better at producing meets. I just see track meets like this as a money losing venture, due to limited local audience, and lower quality fields before the WC. Maybe there's something I'm missing. Good luck to them. In the end, we need more folks throwing their hat in the ring to produce events.
LetsRun should host a track meet where everyone gets a drug test every 400 meters.

And when they fail to find positives someone will claims the drugs flush out at 399m.
Here's the problem. It is binge drinking. It is Beer Fest glorifying drinking.
Athletes whose career was cut short or not fully realized due to the sauce:
Rono *(could have made a later Olympics?),
Prefontaine,
Stark,
Wanjiru
Do we need any more?
I think this is a great idea from flotrack. Take a note from baseball where fans can sit in the stands and enjoy food and beer. It's a push to bring more fans to track and field, which I think is great.
Flotrack's race coincides with the Portland Track Festival's special 10,000, August 8th. A good move for the track fan to double up the weekend. Runners cannot use rankings to qualify in the 5000 or 10000 anyway, so Flotrack's race would only be a last-chance for sprint, middle and field event atheltes.
It'd be great if the two could coordinate; bring Flotrack's festivities to the Saturday night event, and the know how of the Portland Track Festival to Flotrack's race organization.
Great there will be more elite T&F meets in the USA but I fail to see anything new, different or innovative that Flotrak is going to do. Music food beer? That's it? what makes that so special? I know of many other meets in the USA that do that. So what is so new and different that they are going to do?
