Why is Stephen Hawking famous?

Don't quote me on this, I might be wrong, but I think he's famous for inventing the Toblerone.

He's a great physicist.

Oh, he's a guest star on The Big Bang Theory sometimes.

Ever heard of Google?

And he was on an episode of STTNG too.

He beat Lou Gehrigs disease.

It really amazes me that grown people watch that show. It's literally not funny. Plus they have the most over the top laugh track that I've ever heard.

Because he's a paraplegic or whatever he is. He is not a real scientist at all.

I thought this being Letsrun, there would probably be a lot of Stephen Hawking fanboys on here who would love nothing better than to write lots of stuff about why he's one of the greatest people alive. I'd prefer the letsrun version than the google version. I assumed he was a great physicist. What made him so great that 'regular joes' should care? Did his work benefit humankind in some significant way?

Letsrun is for the upper echelon of society, not 'regular joes.' If you want to know how Hawking relates to average joes maybe try Reddit or Runner's World?

Depends what you by "benefit". His work is in cosmology - its about understanding and explaining the origin, structure and fate of the universe of a whole.

Many believe that studying such things is a worthwhile pursuit irrespective of tangible, practical benefits.

Also, much of our modern technological world relies on results for which there was no practical application when they were first investigated.
