After running my first XC season I finished with a 16:34 5k PR off of 45 mpw. When indoor season started everything was going well and I had progressed to 55 mpw over 6 weeks post XC season (1 week break after XC). Didn't feel any injury coming on or really any niggling pains and suddenly early January during a 3 mile tempo my calf tightened and I couldn't put weight on my leg. After 6 weeks of PT, the therapist finally said I needed a bone scan. Which came back showing I had a nearly healed stress fracture high on my tibia.
For the entire time I was unable to run I swam vigorously in the pool. I had some swim background so I was able to get back into swimming frequently easily. Each session in the pool for between 60-80 minutes 6 days a week. Sessions consisted of shorter intervals (100s-200s) and long intervals (400s-800), steady swims, and long fartlek sessions.
I am very curious if anyone has any experience with something like this and is willing to share how difficult and or how long it will take to come back. Two of my other questions are; whether or not my base from summer through XC is gone, and if I can still manage a good outdoor season (starts mid March). I will be easing back into running this upcoming week.
