I had to take about 7 years off running due to injuries, but I did a lot of cycling during that time, and I've run the past year (15 miles per week) with no real issues. I am still thin and in good shape due to cycling and weight training.
I'd like to get back to competing in some 5k races, but I am not willing to risk injury, therefore I am limiting myself to 20 miles per week.
For some reference, I am 31 years old, ran D2 in college and posted PRs of 15:00 in the 5k, 32:30 10k, and 1:12 in the half-marathon. I ran a 5k for fun last year in 18 mins, but would like to get down to the low 16 min. range if possible. I'm thinking of a weekly training plan such as this:
One interval workout per week - 5 miles total
One tempo run - 6 miles total
One long run - 9 miles total
2 days a week I will do longish bike rides, around 2 hours each
2 days a week weight training and elliptical
Any experiences or advice offered is much appreciated. Or if you just want to say my goal of 16 min. 5k is unreasonable that is welcome too. Thanks
