DII-Jack Hazen, Malone the school is a hole, academics are weak, other athletic programs are weak, and it is located is right off the highway in Canton, OH. Yet coming off the transition nomansland from the NAIA, they jump right back to being competitive in the DII top 10-ish with both teams.
DI is more difficult because the top teams are either large state funded schools, or elite private schools. And all have basically the same base facilities and scholarships. I think you have to say Michigan State has it going. They are very competitive with an ugly and boring campus in the flat lands of Michigan, while competing against Michigan, Grand Valley, Hillsdale and the other DII's in Michigan for local top talent.
