He's putting on an exhibition of XC running.
No one else in the US can touch him in cross.

I'd love to see him take it to Rupp on the track.
Stanford > Oregon
Who cares? Get him on the track. If you can't run on the track, you cannot run on the world stage. Derrick know this. He opted out for this xc race because he needs to keep his name in the spotlight.

I'd love to see Rupp try to take it to Derrick on the xc course.
How much money do you think it would take to almost 'shame' Rupp into racing? Would $100,000 on indiegogo do the trick?

Who cares? I care.
. I think xc may end up in the Olympics - maybe instead of the 10,000. Xc is how the sport originated. If tandf is trying to go more X games, it should certainly have the 10,000 be xc instead of the track.
That being said, I like the 10,000 way more than the 5,000. If we have to cut one olympic event, i'd say 5000 not 10,000. Think about all of the epic 10,000 races. Mills, Haile - Tergat, Farah . Those were some of the highlights of the Games. When has the been the case in the 5000?
Dellinger and schul...el g and bekele...ngugi's seoul breakaway...baumann's homestretch kick against bitok...kuts over pirie and Ibbotson...zatopek hitting the 2nd gold of his games..
you certainly don't know much history of the sport for someone that runs a track and field website. pretty weak, man.
There will be surfing Olympics before this cross-country thing. That's just the way it is.
Derrick just gave Ritz the donkey punch!

Don't forget Montreal OG 5Km.
Most exciting race I ever saw.
Derrick's stride is perfect for XC. But when it comes to the track, he needs to have "The KICK!" which he has not yet mastered. Jordan Hasay had the same problem and now seems to be improving immensely under Salazar. Derrick should give Alberto a call. Wink.
agree with incred again, way better 5k show downs and rojo missing 04 and 08 10ks with Bekele and Sihine? weak argument rojo.
Derrick is my favorite runner but he will never get the attention he deserves until he's a world beater on the track, probably not going to happen but I can't wait until he moves to the marathon.

2003 World Championship 5000m was hands down one of the wildest distance races of all time.
2004 Olympics (which was effectively a rematch of the three main players from the previous year)
I could go pre-millenium but I feel like you made this statement without any real consideration so it doesn't seem worth it.
Agree. Derrick needs the mentoring/coaching under Salazar. Once he obtains that closing speed, he is world class. WORLD CLASS!
Derrick v Rupp in xc would go a lot like this:

$100,000? Rupp's babysitting job pays more than that!

True. The track is the stage.
The track is not Derrick's stage -- his stage, once he stays healthy long enough to get the mileage under him for a few cycles, is most certainly the marathon. Wish he'd run a half sooner, rather than later.
why does everybody say this? why would you think a 24yo 13:09 guy (who hasn't ran close to his potential for the track 10K) is "made for" the marathon? what are you basing this off of? do you know of some crazy 20+ mile long runs that Derrick has thrown down that the rest of us don't know about? cripes let the the guy race a half first.

You think Farah's 10000 was more epic than his 5000? Didn't he win them both?
