American cops are known for liking donuts. Do you think they could pull off a similar feat?

Call the Bentonville AR police department and ask for Joe Falcon.
Only 64? The U.S. can do that in its sleep.
As much as I like Joe, you missed your point.
Police need to be strong enough to apprehend criminals, not endurance athletes. I could not care less whether a cop can finish a marathon. Anything under 6:00 for one mile is more than endurancy enough to be a cop.
My guess is every year for decades in the NYC Marathon alone there are over 64 runners who have occupation as cop that finish the marathon.
Law enforcement is probably high among having former athletes who work there, and a lot probably like to stay in some form of shape, and running, swimming, biking/triathlons lifting would be some of the ways most likely to keep in shape.
How many cops in the USA 500k? 1 million? hell yes 64 could run a marathon, there may even be some that are reasonably competitive sub 2:30 or faster if male.
11 in Rhode Island for this 1 race alone, 53 more in the country easy. http://www.providencejournal.com/breaking-news/content/20140404-r.i.-state-police-marathoners-provide-big-boost-to-cops-for-kids-with-cancer.ece
There is no such thing as an "anti-terrorism movie." What terrorists are after is attention, to get on the news and in movies. If you make a movie against them you're giving them exactly what they want. Don't feed the trolls.
America is hopelessly addicted to terrorism. Bunch of damn fools.

exactly, that's why crossfit is the best form of exercise for cops (and everyone else). Moreover, a good crossfit athlete is still able to run sub 3 in the marathon but he usually doesn't cares and that is why you never read about it (imagine the amount of chicks he can sleep with in 3h).
In the 1770's the Founding Fathers of the United States did not want a European style military class. Thus the US employs regular people as soldiers and police who learn how to use firearms but are not trained to fight as individuals.
In the 1860's the Meiji Restoration in Japan instituted freedom, suffrage, democracy, universal primary and secondary education, and outlawed the 2,000 year old class system. Many of the Samurai Class became police and soldiers. To balance the terrifying, frightening mental and physical fighting skills of ex-Samurai policemen, the police were given only lower ranks, with upper management wholy consisting of professional civilian managers. This system remains to this day.
I'm intrigued by the concept. Wonder how they'll be dispersed/assigned-- similarly to pace-group leader-- and whether assignments near the back of the back carry more shame.
Also wonder what the monitors will think if images coming in include the confines of a porta-potty, a wobbly image trained on the ground as the policeman works out a cramp, etc.
Each of these Japanese police officers are only running about 1/4 of the marathon, a little over 10k.
If they choose to train for it -Yes.

There are actually 13.5 million cops in the US so you're right, 64 of them should be able to do a marathon

Seems like the point is not to condition them, but for the police to protect runners in real time on the course. In case some Islamist wants to attack runners. It's a great idea, in addition to whatever other security measures. Marilson Dos Santos deserved security too.
In all honesty, if I were a runner that made the Olympic team, I would not go to Rio. Security--American and Brazilian--could give less a crap about a runner. No way I'm going to risk those Islamists, no matter how good the punani is in the athletes village, and if I survive, sponsor Ops at home. However, 2020 id have more faith in the Japanese to keep it secure... #booyea #tokyo2020
