Why am I just finding out about this kid? Am I late to the bandwagon? 147.4 indoor in January?? Sophmore?? Where'd he come from?? Wow. Rio 2016.

Because he actually did come out of nowhere. He went on a mission for two years and just came back this school year.

A mission doing what for two years and where? Training with Brother O'connel in Iten?
1:47 is pretty unbelievable unless he was actually training for two years somewhere.
Mormons make a big deal about being unable to train on their missions and coming back fat and out of shape, etc., what gives here?
What kind of name is Shaquille for a Mormon?
He was the USA Jr National Champ in the 800 in 2012 so its not like he came out of "nowhere." He's a fast and talented kid and always has been. That being said, I've been surprised at how fast he's gotten back into shape after returning from his mission to England in August. He didn't seem to gain any weight, which usually seems to be the biggest obstacle to overcome. He's also more of a 400/800 guy so I doubt the lack of aerobic work is hurting him too much since his leg speed is still there.
Also, the guy is 21 so you're going to have to wait a couple of years before you can call him an age cheat.
Thx Running Coug, that's good info.
Finally new blood US 800m fans can get excited about. The old guard is a little hard to stomach with all of the self promotion and limited racing.
I do see now he ran in 2012, but there's a big difference between 1:50ish outdoor and 1:47.44 indoor- and on 5 months of training, Excited to see this type of young talent.
he is 21 and a sophomore. I am 19 and also a sophomore. please explain how that is not age cheating?

You will never be a winner with a whiny excuse filled attitude you are showing with that comment. I played sports and I never cared how old anyone was. Young or old it didn't matter. Don't be a bitch.
I question the intelligence of a man who actually CONVERTED to mormonism. The LDS religion literally hates black people, it\'s in their doctrine that the evil people\'s skin was turned black. Yet there are still respectable African-Americans that swallow the mormon fake friendliness/sense of community.
I thought this was a T&F and running board that likes to talk about the Dow going Down, Dis-interested wives, and chicks in Starbucks? Why don't you bigots/racists go discuss this BS on some historical religion board. I know some Mormons, nicest people in the world with incredibly successful families, I'm sure a lot of us are jealous-- but who cares?
I am talking about an unknown American showing up out of nowhere, on a few weeks (16?) of training, and laying down a 1:47.44. Damn- that's impressive. Smooth as silk on the video, and isn't obnoxiously posing naked and waving his arms to get our attention. My new favorite Am 800m runner. He can take out the imports at nationals- watch!!
If that's not exciting enough- go start your own thread about how your mommy used to make you read the Mormon Bible and now you have mommy issues as an adult and lash out at black people on anonymous chat boards and call them rapists and believe they are the reason for Down goes the Dow conversations and you never having run a sub 18 5k.
Now- does anyone know who is writing this kids workouts? Is it Eyestone? Does he know MD? When and what is the kid running next?
Ryan Waite, no one cares about your 800 prodigy. Get back to recruiting.
This was refreshing to read. I'm a Mormon, former BYU Athlete (short lived) and Coach and love this sport. I have respect for all flavors of people as do most in the faith.
I know "Shaq" personally and can tell you he is absolutely pure. The dude is the real deal, special raw speed. He is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet and absolutely an athlete that all track fans should get behind and support. (even the letsrun version of "track fan")
Coach Eyestone writes his workouts and he has an amazing crop of middle distance guys to train with. He is just flat out talented. Ryan Waite I'm sure trains with Shaq, but is not in charge of the training and is doing a fantastic job in his first year on staff.
Lets rally behind some talent here people, not waste our lives caught up in the sideshow.
This has gone from offensive to even people that aren't mormens to hilarious. LR now has some anonymous chatboard evangelist trying to tell a mormon missionary to uncovert himself because he is black and they are really trying to steal his money- funny stuff man. Loony.
Thanks for the info Chris Shane. Sounds like you know the program there in Utah. Eyestone is a genius. Top 3 in country.
I can't stomach "Shaq". Bad taste. Since Cougar guy said he's been missionarying in England, henceforth he shall be known on LR as Sir Shaq. To distinguish him from the big guy I am not a fan of.
I think we are seeing the future of American MD here. Sir Shaq watch is on.
Ran close to 1:50 in hs near Savannah, GA.
Sir Shaq it is. I'm not a fan of the big guy either. As for the bigot comments, they are so ridiculously off target, they don't even deserve a response. I give a 1/10 troll score.
Sir Shaq watch according to BYU website= 600M this weekend in Albuquerque.
Mondo with serious banked turns if I remember correctly.
AR 1:15.61 Sowinski.
That may be a little tall, let's call 1:17.2

While Joseph Smith was a pedophile I think it's more appropriate that people know the REAL LDS religion. This is your prophet? How do you justify that Daddy's boy Shane?
Joseph Smith said that the moon was inhabited by people six feet tall who dressed like Quakers and lived to be 1,000 years old (Source: Journal of Oliver B. Huntington, a devout Mormon contemporary of Joseph Smith; copy at Utah State Historical Society, Vol. 2, p. 166)
I totally agree with one point you make; I do love my pops. Have we met? You seem to know me so well......we must get together for some decaf sometime, seriously, you are fantastically gifted.
ABQ is a great place to run a fast 600 will be tuned in from afar.
