I will be in Dallas for business and staying downtown near the convention center. I will not have a car. Are there any decent routes or greenways nearby or will I be totally locked in downtown by highways and such?

The Katy trail is to the north. Popular, trendy jogging trail. Trinity trail, southward offers lots of dirt, gravel and/or paved trail. That's what I'd recommend, unless you'd rather people watch than run - in that case go katy. You could also look up the Dallas marathon map and follow it. It starts at the convention center and takes you through some nice neighborhoods, toward the lake. Also you could head to Santa Fe trail, through the deep Ellum area (east), which leads to white rock lake about seven miles east. Downtown Dallas is not as crowded as your typical metropolis so running through the city to the trails is no big deal. Plenty of options.
The Trinity Trail? Is that the long dirt road that goes under I-30 and I-35?
Where do you park for that trail? Is it safe to run on?

Yes, I live in Dallas and interested how you access that dirt trail? I haven't found any dirt trails in the city, but I have heard about Trinity.
OP, without a car Katy Trail will be a mile or so from downtown. It's a 3.5 mile trail that goes interrupted from American Airlines Center to SMU. You could then run around SMU's campus a bit.
There is another line called Santa Fe trail that is less crowded and would take you to White Rock Lake (big running lake), but it's a little more tricky to get to.
I am in Dallas for business and just ran 6 miles this morning on the "Trinity Sands Trail". It's a concrete path that sort of follows a creek marshy area... It's at least 3 miles long without having to cross any traffic. Not bad for a short run... I'm staying in a hotel on Market Center Blvd and connected with the path about 1/4 mile from the hotel entrance
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
