I am a sophomore in HS, I am a fairly experienced runner, I have been running since the 6th grade. I started to get competitive with the sport in 8th grade, when i ran about 20 mpw and lots of hard workouts during cross country.
-I then ran an 11:27 2 mile during that season.
-I ran a 5:15ish 1600 that year in track, and a 2:19 800 (main focus)
Then my freshman year i started to get very serious during the summer and unfortunately, a bit too serious considering the coach i had. I ran around 20 mpw to start the summer, then I built up to 30, and held that for a couple weeks, eventually i moved up to 2 weeks at 42, and 46 miles, and a week at 55 miles. I ran a 10k right after the xc season had started
-10k- (all hills) 39:18
I had a non-serious coach in which only allowed me to average around 22 mpw the whole season, ruining my chances for anything big in that season. I ended the season with a 17:20 3 mile PR
-17:20 3 mile
The next season in track I decided not to run over the winter for some reason, I got hurt before the indoor season. I ended up pulling my groin (ouch), I couldn't run normal for 2 weeks, and couldn't srint for 2 more weeks after that. After the injury was gone came the 2nd indoor meet where i ran fairly. i was drinking 5-7 sodas a day at this point for no reason.
-1600 5:20
-800 split 2:28
I wasnt too pleased with this but i knew i didnt run bad. I ran the rest of the season with about 25 mpw and a lot of intensity and high quality speed workouts. I focussed my season on the 3200, and didnt try hard in the 1600 once.
-3200 (10:59)
-1600 (5:15)
The next summer i started to train mid summer, and built up to 40 mpw where i ran a single 1 mile race. I had done no speed work prior to the race, all aerobic runs.
-1600 5:03
I broke out in the race and saw what mileage could do. Unfortunately, my new coach who had coached me during the past track season wasnt big on mileage. I averaged about 28-33 mpw.
-28-33 mpw
17:35 5k
I ran a 17:35 5k in a race that i ran well in. the only race i ran well in all season, I really saw my results that i had been wanting to see in that race. I then went on to have a terrible race at regionals, and a terrible race at sectionals. I didn't keep a healthy diet on the weekends, I would indulge in a 2-liter soda by myself each weekend. I realize now how bad that was for my body.
I have been running for 6 weeks now, i have built my mileage from 25 mpw up to 45 mpw this week. I plan on averaging 40-55 mpw this season, and I have goals of sub 10:20 during this track season, and a 10k goal for right after the season of sub 37:00.
-- goals
- sub 10:20
- sub 37:00
I have been maintaining a very structured diet, and working on my strength a lot to make me stronger because im not very tall, and am not very powerful in a running sense (400-not sub 1:00) This past fall and this winter i have grown around 4 inches, and i have noticed a gain in my abdominal region and arms.
I would really like your thoughts on whether or not you think i will reach my goals.
also i have periodized my training into 5 phases
- phase 1 - 6 weeks - base - (built to 45 mpw)
phase 2 6-8 weeks - endurance, (cruise intervals, tempos, fartleks, longruns) 45-55 mpw
phase 3 3-5 weeks long race simulating intervals (repeat k's, repeat miles, repeat 800's) 40-50 mpw
phase 4 (3-4 weeks) speed workouts (repeats 400s, 600s, 200s) mpw- 35-45 (one mid 50 mile week)
phase 5 2 weeks long, taper ( 2 hard workouts, and 1 long run) 30,20 mpw
