I'm a high school cross country and long distance track runner. I belong to a high school track team with a relatively weak distance team. There will probably only be 2 guys breaking 5 minutes in the 1600 meter. Our sprinting team on the other hand is decent. Today I got into an argument with my coach about who should run on the inner lanes (1-4) and who should run on the outer lanes. The sprinters in our school have for as long as I have remembered gotten preference to the inner lanes even though thier workouts rarely include runs over 400 meters. Today the sprinters were doing 200 300 and baton exchanges while the distance runners had ladders that peaked at 1600 meters. I argued with the coach that you can't accurately measure a 1600 meter in lane 5 and above, and so I wouldn't be able to accurately measure my pace nor distance if I did 4 laps. The sprinters on the other hand are able to measure a 300 meter on the outer lanes with 100% accuracy if they just lined up at the proper markings. My coach said something along the line that sprinters are sprinting and that a few milliseconds wouldn't destroy my time. I don't get her logic and it really got me steamed for a while. Running 4 times around the track in lane 5 will certainly impact my pacing and distance. I just feel like I should be able to accurately measure let's say 1000 meter repeats and know my time for each of them and there's no way I can do that without being in lane one. And the sprinters have no real reason for being in lane one.
I have decided to apologize to her for my act of deviance since she has been good to me in other regards and allows me to do my own longer workouts. But can anyone explain her logic of how sprinters should get the inner lanes in this situation?
