My kid picked up skiing last year and is starting to take off with it. She's part of a very well- respected devo program and they are doing great with her. This is not a gripe session or anything negative- just trying to educate myself in a sport I don't know a lot about.
I asked her coach what a pre-race routine should include- Any drills/ dynamic stretches like before a running workout/race? She told me basic ski the course, do some sprints to get the HR up, and not to stretch because "tight muscles fire faster"...
In my 20+ years in T&F and a master's in PE I have never heard that before. It's been my experience sprinters and throwers need to thoroughly warm up before competitions/hard efforts- if the case was that tight muscles fire faster why would they bother before?
I get you may not want to stretch outside in the cold before a hard effort, but I never came across a claim that tight muscles fire faster. If anyone has some insight it's appreciated.
I think the world of the program's coaching staff- tons of national/international success- not looking to dispute anyone, just trying to understand a different sport I don't have as much experience in.
Thanks in advance!
