I heard this question raised on The Herd this morning and thought the LR crowd might be interested in responding.
My thoughts? Generally, whomever extends the invitation should pay. Now, since ridiculous social convention almost always dictates that the man should pay, I will break down the options as follows:
1. If the woman gives legit vibes that she is going to put out, then the man should pay. That carries a negative and objectifying implication, but it is what it is.
2. If the woman isn't going to put out but is interested in a second date, they should split the check. No reason for either to be usurped hard-earned cash for nothing more than pleasant company.
3. if the woman has no interest in a second date and wants to make it clear that the guy should never contact her again, she should pay and kindly acknowledge his time.
And before some 14-year-old posts a lame wise-crack and thinks he's gotten over on me, I'll beat him to the punch: I'm always #3 but always end up paying.
