I am currently in physical therapy for a performs/groin injury. I have been off the road for about three weeks. I am 46 years old, and am a decent runner within my age category. I had a groin injury last year, but that one was not as bad (though this current one is not horrible, either), as I could still do some running on it.
Recently, the constant comments of being "tight" from my PT, massage therapist, and chiropractor have given me pause. All say I am tight, especially in my lower back, glutes, and hamstrings. After my half marathon (in November), I my legs were very tight, and the on-site therapist had a fairly difficult time stretching them (it was a cod day, too). According to the experts, I am "weak" in the mid-section, and my hamstrings fire before my glutes, and thus the hams do a lot of the work. Judging by what my PT was saying yesterday, this sounds like a dangerous scenario, especially on a long run (i.e. a 15-20 miler or a marathon race).
Hence, am I a ticking time bomb for a bad hamstring tear (or something else)? I am sure the exercises and stretching I am doing will help, but I do not have an endless amount of time to stretch and workout, especially during the times of year when my mileage is higher. I have responsibilities, and need to know if I am risking too much being a distance runner.
I welcome your advice.
