After all the injuries and setbacks I would rather see him have a year where he has fun "USTAF XC" vs chase an amazing time / performance that may or may not happen and that chase for the time might lead to overtraining and injury.

A 12K XC race at altitude is bad 10 weeks out from a marathon?
Wouldn't that be a good test of one's fitness at that point prior to some of the marathon-specific work?
