He actually charges $1000 for a 6 month block, but that makes sense to me as you'd stay committed and not back out early.
That seems like a great deal. I know many coaches who charge that and more and rarely run with the people they coach. Some never ever see the runner in person.
The only thing that is somewhat worrisome is that he wants all the money up front. As a coach, I just people pay me by the month. Sometimes their job gets in the way or they get injured. I would feel bad if they paid me and couldn't do the training. Other coaches simply want the money up front and if you get hurt, that is too bad for you.
I think the most important factor is how much has the coach helped their other runners. There are some people who have run incredibly fast times but have no clue how to analyze what is holding a runner back and how to make them improve. Look at the other runners who are being coached by this person. Are they all improving? Are they stuck in a rut? If the coach has run 2:19 but all of their 2:55 marathoners are stuck at 2:55 year after year, that coach isn't as useful as a beer guzzling 5 hour marathoner who has helped someone go from 2:55 to 2:35. Look for a coach with a good track record of helping people improve. Don't care about your coaches best times. Worry about how much faster his runners are running after a few marathons under the coaches guidance.
