Hi,
I'm 46M, started running more seriously about 16 months ago. I run the 5k. I ran a 21:13 last week. I use the 5k to calculate VDOT.
I have two related questions that i'm looking for advice, preferably from older runners because I do think the body reacts differently.
I use VDOT tables and am training a modified Jack Daniels program for 5K, essentially reduced everything for 25-30 miles per week (instead of 40-50).
1) I surprisingly can do the R training, up to 400m intervals (at pace without pain)
2) i can do the T training. yesterday, i was able to complete 3x mile intervals at 7:10. i'm sore today, but that's expected. It was a hard workout for me, but not in any way "brutal".
3) But I simply can't complete the Interval training paces at 800m or beyond. My previous 5k (VDOT training) was 22:28 (run in november). I can't even complete the Interval training (say 4 x 800 at I pace).
i am able to run the first one at pace, and then fall apart. I did a session on monday. 3:15, 3;37, 3:42, hammy pain and stop.
Two things happen. Usually, when i run a fast 800, my hamstring tightens/strains, and the next day, i have to rest it and i'm nursing it for several days.
My plan is to raise my Interval pace to 3:35. but that really just changes "interval" to T. Not great.
I'm making progress without Interval paces, so who cares? I guess the big thing for me would be solving the chronic hamstring stress that hits me when i hold a subjectively fast pace for more than 400m.
Any thoughts?
