I had a filling put in, it took less than 10 minutes and my insurance got billed $1000+. All of that money goes to him since it's his own practice.

B*LLSH*T!!!!!
In order to do one filling he had to pay for years of school and then get training and experience and open up a practice that had licensing fees and then had to lease a facility and pay for all of that equipment and staff.
He needs to do a lot of 10 minute fillings at a $1,000 a pop to recoup that money before he comes ahead.
And then he starts to do OK.
$1,000 for a filling? Was it gold?

A root canal is about $1100, a filling is about $170-250 as mentioned. Either you had something weird going on or you are lying.
The normal price for filling a cavity is worth it. They need one doctor, one dental assistant, a receptionist, and all those expensive machines and tools, just for you that one time.

That was nice of you to provide the dental chair and facilities, dental assistant and hygienist, and pay for medical malpractice and taxes so that he was able to pocket the full $1000.
