Elite marathoners often surge during a race. I was wondering if anyone knows if this would cause any lactate build up and inhibit their performance later in the race, or are they able to return to running at the same aerobic threshold pace as before (and does the lactate disappear? If so, how long does it take?)
If your marathon potential is limited by your aerobic capacity, would the optimal marathon strategy be to run at your aerobic threshold with some short fast intervals of anaerobic surges?
