informal surveys of relatives/cousins during the holiday: high school cousins barely using it because of parents/aunt/uncles now monitor their profiles; college age cousins are increasing weary of privacy issues and just posting generic "I'm still here" photos; aunts/uncles can't remember passwords.
FB going forward will return to being a glorified contact directory as youngsters flee or diminish their presence though the company will remain a social media stalwart by virtue of its omnipresence.
I wish this were true. But we are a society full of butt-kissers and wagon-jumpers who file into any goliath that can't be displaced. Those who grew up in the late 90s dreamed of much better things for the internet... Instead the masses sold our souls out to a prefab architecture which precludes all the wondrous possibility dreamed of in the young days of the internet. The architecture has gotten worse and worse in the last 6 years, deliberately depriving users of choice, freedom, identity, etc. in the name of corporate control and big money. It's beyond disgusting, Unchristian, unpunk rock, uncool, and I have heard nary a word about it.
FB was cool when it started out: a few elite colleges. Then some of the state schools. Hookup city and creativity in hooking up and spitting game: the years 2004 to 2008. People listed their residences! out of a drop down toggle menu. It was awesome. I imagine for a brief bit of time, snapchat is like that. But all the new social media--Instagram, Vine, etc.--are still just corporate puppetry and its users, corporate pawns. So sad
