I have been dealing with this issue for quite a while with no good solution.
Background 54 years old, been running for 36 years. Married with a small child and a high energy job
Basically if I run for more than two days in a row I end up walking in the middle of run because of a lack of energy. Other times I head out the door after a couple of days of running and am dead from step 1.
One solution I have come up with is two days hard in a row, with the next two days totally off. This works pretty well and I feel recovered when it is time to run hard again. I can run good quality two days in a row but the third I always feel like crap whether the two days are easy or hard. The problem is on a good week I am running four days a week and on a bad week only three. The consequence is that I am getting fitter but also gaining weight.
Any advice on how I can speed recovery or what I can do to improve my schedule. I have thought about walking on the days off or walking/jogging but have yet to try that.
