Some kid thinks he can break 4 in the mile (1600) with only a 4:15 pr his junior year. Do you think it's possible for him to hit 3:59.99 by the end of his senior year?

15 seconds is nearing infinity in the mile. Especially when you are starting to get that low. I say no and you should definitely listen to me, even though I have no credentials of running that fast at all and have no idea who the kid is. But according to letsrun, I'm perfectly qualified.

Obviously it extremely unlikely. Only 1 person has ever made that big of a jump before - but you might be surprised at some of the improvements.
You mention the 1600 so that's what I'll show below.
On the all-time US high school 1600/Mile list there are 10 boys that have run 4:01.5 or faster for a Mile which is roughly 4:00 for 1600. Their best "1600" (these all happen to be converted Mile times) in their junior year from fastest to slowest were:
3:57.7c
3:58.32c
3:59.92c
4:01.92c
4:06.6c
4:08.19c
4:09.04c
4:11.5c
4:11.8c
4:16.07c

Sure. He does have a sub 1:49 800m though and only ran the 4:15 once, won by 10 seconds and has been running 30mw right? Just bump that mileage up to 60 over the summer and get in some competitive races and it will be close.
Realistically the odds of anyone (even if you ran 4:05 the year before. A lot of people never match their junior year PRs) running 4:00 for 1600 is really low. Even if your in shape, having the weather and competition line up gets to be hard.
I can say with 100% confidence that he will NOT run a sub-4 minute mile in high school. This has never been done and there is no way he will be the first. The human body is not capable of running a sub-4 while still in high school. This is a proven scientific fact (have you ever studied calculus?!?!?).
Just stop talking make-believe nonsense and get to training, brah!

Thanks for the information. I had a argument with a classmate a little while ago where he said some guy ran a mile under 4 minutes once and I said nobody has done it. I didn't think you could run a mile under 5 minutes but it looks like somebody did that.
Is running bad for your knees?
Where does this kid live? Did he run XC this year? If so, did he make fl or nxn? Does he have an athletic.net profile or something of that nature? Give us more information and we can help you.

Yes; I was told this in high school by my parents. It also enlarges your heart and causes hair to grow on your palms.
Possible - yes, but highly unlikely.
just ask these guys and many others (times run as sophomores)...
