Now it has come out that the alleged victim totally created the perp out of thin air

Anyone at UVA that can comment on this madness?

It's true that the reporter (I use the term reporter loosely) screwed the story up pretty badly.
However, the worst part is that the reporter's failure is now the story, shifting focus away from what is really a serious problem at universities and within the Greek life system.
The boys in the fraternity in question are going to get their rich daddies to sue her for everything she's worth, and unfortunately we'll never know if they are actually guilty of anything the reporter claims they are.
If it's such a problem why'd they have to fabricate a story? Just go find a real example.

+1
The 'journalist' was embarrassingly bad. She had an agenda she wanted to push and pushed it. How she couldn't even bother to talk to Jackie's friends is beyond me.
Her so-called friends were pretty poor as well. One of them rejects her romantically. She then says shes' got a hot junior who is into her (to make the initial guy jealous). They look him up and he doesn't even exist at the school but yet claim they had no reason to doubt her story of rape. It takes about 5 seconds to realize this was a case of rejected love looking for attention.
This type of stuff happens all the time. Am I saying rape isn't a problem? No I'm not. It's a problem but so are false accusations of rape.
Normally it's a women's advocate trying to get attention.
Rojo, are you aware of the case at Princeton in 1991? A sexual assault advocate there - Mindy Brickman - was doing all sorts of TBTN marches. She spoke publicly and wrote about two rapes - one in HS and one in college.
She told everyone on campus who the rapist was and said he was forced to take a leave. Apparently the dean wrote in to say it wasn't true - there was no case like that - so she recanted and said shew as indeed raped but admitted she had never met the man whom she said raped her.
She then says he actually didn't rape her but someone else did.
But take a look at her accusations. They are so over the top - they remind me of the Rolling Stone article. Do I believe either one of these happened anywhere close to how it was describe? No way. Yet she's a lawyer now.
Only a month later, Mindy Brickman recants with no repurcussions:

The problem is when you accuse someone who is actually innocent (the so called "boys in the fraternity in question" with their "rich daddies"), you make it tougher for those who are truly victims of rape to come forward. This fraternity and its members may be great guys not guilty of anything like what she accused them of but there will always be that ping of doubt that will be cast on them like the Duke Lax boys.
Assuming that the story was fabricated (which it appears it was), the girl should be kicked out of school for starting this mess (if she is still there) and Rolling Stone should fire the reporter and editor (who allowed this to be the cover story without reviewing the facts). Lawsuits could happen too against RS and these 3 individuals which is not a bad thing because they have damaged people seriously.
While the reporter may be sued, so will Rolling Stone (if a suit is brought) and RS is the one with money to pay. Remember that this story has closed down the fraternity system at UVA through the beginning of next year and damaged people's reputations from the fraternity that may make it tough for them to get jobs by association with the story.
There are problems with sexual assault on campuses and the rest of the country. Bringing stories that are false makes it that much harder for those who are truly victims of such heinous acts to come forward and be heard.
yes to most of the above, but she should be in JAIL *if* she did indeed fabricate the tale. false accusations such as this should be punishable by prison time, not simply remedied via civil means.
I lean towards the story being more true than false, as someone who currently attends a large D1 university that pushes greek life this story doesn't surprise me at all. Doesn't mean this particular story is true but in general frats are fvcked up rape factories.
The one thing in particular bullshit point that people harp on the reporter for is that the fraternity claims they did not have a party that night, meaning that they did not register a party and guest list with UVA.
This is bullshit because frats aren't careful about following university policies to the t and very likely have a party at least once a month that isn't registered.
How bad? So bad the "journalist" couldn't even write for LetsRun. THAT BAD.
I was a student at Princeton when this incident occurred. My girlfriend at the time had asked me to join her in marching at the Take Back the Night event at which Mindy Brickman spoke and I had refused. She was upset about this, but when Mindy Brickman's deception came to light, that fiasco provided cover for my decision and I was off the hook. Thanks, Mindy!

The point is there were other reports both at UVA and others, and they were going to find a real example when "Jackie" popped up. I'll also point out that while RS didn't do good work in not fact checking, they weren't the ones that fabricated the story.
So RS screwed up big time because they assumed that since Jackie's story fit the narrative of other reports at UVA and other campus's that they had their real example right there.
I think the implication of the story that's is mainly a problem with the Greek system is misguided. Greek's represent a target because they're a group that many people want to join and socialize with and they have parties to promote that. People get drunk at parties, and bad things can happen when people get REALLY drunk.
If Greek's across the country all stopped having parties tomorrow people would go someone else and party and the same shit would happen. There are people in all walks of life (that should know better) that either do things when drunk that they regret, or take advantage of others when they are drunk. When you get both of those types together at the same place and time, bad things will happen if it's a fraternity house or a bowling alley.
