So I'm a freshman in college (lower-level D1 school) and am currently training on my own. Today I ran a 5k race and ran a slightly slower time than I did over two years ago. I'm starting to think that I'm doing something really wrong with my training. I've been trying to run about 80 mpw (at least 70+) with a few unscheduled workouts per week mainly tempo runs, all the rest are easy runs. I'm not doing really any speed work and so 5k pace feels incredibly fast. I'm guessing that I should be doing more scheduled track workouts because I have a solid base. Any suggestions on altering my training for 5k races? What are some good specific speed workouts?
