Dixie State in Saint George UT
You could probably walk on most of them

Some of the better programs would turn their noses up. I remember Gary Towne of Chico saying that he was having to turn away guys in the 9:30 range due to roster constraints. At least in Ca. Though you should be able to walk on to most other teams and have a chance to earn a jersey.
Queens College! Prior to my breakout XC season, my 5k track PR was 16:37
Bentley University in Waltham, MA.
USA Today's #1 Ranked Accounting Undergrad and #2 Overall Business Undergrad.
Does region of the country matter to you? You could probably walk on to any GLIAC school. GVSU probably wouldn't turn you away.
Yeah gliac. I walked on easily. Where you go from there is up to you.

Not sure about XC, but GVSU did not let my buddy walk on as pole vaulter and he went 14'0.5" in high school (this was in the fall/winter of 2006). They have some pretty tough programs over there.
Interesting... Did your friend contact GV prior to starting school there? Typically if you are in contact with them during your senior year they will let most people join the team. However, if you just show up the tryout standards are higher. Brent Showerman, 14th at xc nationals, had to tryout with them after transferring from Michigan St. They didn't let him just walk on. Perhaps the standards for incoming fr are inceasing at GV now, I don't really know. They have a very large team. I don't know about how they select PV athletes though. I feel like the school school record holder, Bryant Wilson, had a hs pr of 13'6". There could have been some reason we don't know of why they didn't let your friend on. Perhaps they already had a decent sized PV group.

They did indeed have a very good sized PV group at that time. Strong group too. At the GLIAC indoor championships that season, their 4 jumpers went 16'1", 14'8", 14'1", and 14'1" (2 sophs and 2 frosh). A couple of them were multi-athletes (including a former state champion hurdler). These jumps were nowhere near the PBs for these kids, I just remember the heights because I was at the meet that day and have a good memory.
In addition to this, they did not like my buddy's height (5'9.5") or speed (none). So, upon reflection, you can disregard my previous post.
Why not D3, you can actually compete on most teams, it's not like you'll be getting a scholarship anywhere. Find a coach who's interested in development, I went from 1658 to a 1510 in my 4 years.
Try the entire Peach Belt Conference !
Good weather and some hot women.
In my area: Wayne State, University of Sioux Falls
You might be able to walk-on at Augustana, but you would probably get your butt kicked in workouts as they are a top-10 team nationally.
I've considered D3 but I dunno the times are kind of slow... not that's a bad thing, but I wouldn't want to be the #1 or 2 guy my first year in. It's also a question of academics. I don't know any good D3 schools. I've had a few contact me, and it was well...eh. Teams with their fastest guys running like in the 30min range for a 8k. I've just had bad experiences with D3 schools..

I'll check em out!
just for the record I'm fine with walking on any team. Also I live in Texas and wouldn't want to go too far - states within a 1-2 state boundary are my limit.

There are a lot of D3 teams where 16:37 wouldn't put you near the #1 or #2 guy. Don't rule them out just because some D3 schools really suck.

Here are the results from this year's Division 3 south/southeast regional meet.
http://www.tfrrs.org/results/xc/7278There are several Texas schools in it.
Telling this kid that his 16:37 is not going to get him a DII scholarship is wrong. More factors go into recruiting him than just his 5k PR.
1. Where was this run?
2. Is he a consistent sub 17:00 runner?
3. What are his track PR's? A 16:37 guy who runs 4:25 mile or 1:57 800 or a 9:40 two mile is more appealing than a kid that has much slower track times.
4. Who coached him in HS?
5. Low or high mileage?
6. Anyone on team to run or train with ?
7. Injury history or injury prone?
8. GPA and test scores? Will he be a counter?
9. What does a college coach see in him potential wise when they see him run?
10. How long has he been running?
There's plenty of 16:37 guys out of HS who have had great college running careers.
I ran 16:50, 4:32, and 1:59 in HS
I went on to run 25:15, 15:01, 3:55, 4:14, 1:56 in college.
I ran at a DII school and after walking on earned a scholarship and was a multiple all conference performer in xc and track.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Running for Bowerman Track Club used to be cool now its embarrassing
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
