As someone who has trained with elite level runners, I can tell you what they do. they do speedwork in the cold weather wherever they can find it. If that means getting into a local high school or college indoor track for a half hour then so be it. Or, if the roads are cleared and footing is decent, they do what they do in the warm, months- they train and do their speedwork on the roads.
This what I see from local elites and "B" level elites. People such at Abdi, Meb and Ryan Hall, etc that are "A" level, are known to go to a warm climate area for three months. On days like last year's winter, in many parts of the country, some have no choice but to use a treadmill.
Running in cold weather makes you strong.
Yea i agree w/ you runnin in the cold def makes you stronger.. Just not sure if its' worth the risk getting injured trying to go fast.. I live in Buffalo, NY we just got 7' of snow in certain spots.. So I guess treadmill it is.. haha What is the best interval session for a sub 18 5k? 1600's@ 5:47 2mins rest... 800's at 2:50 1min rest, or 400's @ 1:25 w/ 30 secs rest? or none of the above? lol

Botanical Gardens in Buffalo. 2 laps = 3 miles.
I like to start with 2 warm up laps then start 400's or 800's using my watch. Always kept plowed and salted when needed. Also very little traffic.
I'm s. of buff to be exact
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Matt Choi was drinking beer halfway through the Boston Marathon
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
