I'm thinking both in terms of time and money. I have two people on my facebook, one of which is a PhD student and the other a med student, and these two seem to always be going somewhere. One of them does things like go to Nepal for a week randomly or fly nearly across the country to ski for a weekend. I believe she spent two full summers traveling around Europe. The other is a guy who is a PhD student yet has gone on holidays to Hawaii, all over the US, backpacked in South America, and is now going on a Caribbean cruise for a week with his fiance. I realize some of these things don't cost as much as you'd think, but these two probably spend $15+k/year traveling. Do parents really just fund this kind of stuff? Just give their children tens of thousands of dollars in spending cash? I'm not jealous of that; it just seems... wrong to me to spend other people's money, especially when it's just on entertainment.
