5k test/race and long run together?

    I'd like to run a 5 km all out test (maybe as a Parkrun "race") on Saturday.

    But Saturday is also my long run day and I have 18 km planned for next Saturday.

    Does it make sense to combine the two? 3 km warmup plus 5 km test/"race" plus 10 km easy cool down? Or would it be too much a stress for leg muscles and such?

    Background: cyclist with almost no running in the last few years, I am in the fourth week, and first recovery week, of a 20 week HM training plan, freely based on Brad Hudson's "Run Faster from the 5K to the Marathon".

    That's my problem, I only have Saturday for long runs.

    Totally doable for a lot of people. Is it a good idea for you? Probably not. Be ready to make the CD short if you start to slog too much.

    ps: parkruns are full of unfit people who have no clue bout what they are doing. try to get a good starting position or you will be severely boxed in. this is especially true for the big parkruns in london for instance.

    For marathon training that's fine if you have built up to it during the preceding weeks/months. Typically you should start by extending your quality days with a longer cool down.

    It's seldom the layout of the running you do that will break you. It's too much too soon. Keep your ego down and run a 4 km cool down instead of that double digit long run which probably won't serve you anything at this point in time.
