There's no guarantee that he would've developed the same way Cheserek did.
I'll admit that Verzbicas' performance during the 2012 Fall season was absolutely not reflective of what he was actually capable of at that time. It was simply unintelligent for both him and Vin to start racing when he had missed a huge chunk of the season and had already peaked for the World Junior Triathlon Championships.
Yes, since he was training on something like 30-40 miles per week in HS due to his swimming and biking, there could have been a huge benefit to him finally putting all his efforts into running. But Cheserek's development is just completely unreal. A sub-13:20 5K for what is equivalent to a redshirt freshman is incredible (I say redshirt because he is admittedly one year old to be a standard college freshman).
