Another sub 3 marathon thread. I'm 49 with a PR of 2:54 when I was 40. Over the past 2 years, I've been anywhere from 3:05 to 3:12. Races this fall from 5k to HM all correlate to 3:05-3:10. I got in to Boston for 2015 and was comparing notes with another guy who's got similar recent results. He asked what I would be shooting for in April and I said I'd be pretty happy with a 3:05 especially on that course and it being my first time. Plus there's a pretty big difference to me from 2:59:59 to 3:05. He responded with the subject line above.
My thought is that at my age, I can't upgrade to a different level than what I currently am in only 5 months and that all I can really do is make sure I get in marathon shape so that the recent results do in fact translate to the full.
Training this year was consistent with what I've always done and I've been schlepping along in the sport for over 30 years so it's not like I'm still improving or coming off an injury or something else where I could expect a big jump just off consistent training.
Planning something like a Pfitzinger 18/70 (although reality may be more like 18/55 through the midwest winter).
Thoughts? Can I "move up a level" by April?
