So....Duke is to be condemned for not sending a full team to NCAA regionals.
"For a school of Duke’s pedigree to say in essence, “We can’t do well so we aren’t going to try,” is flat out embarrassing."
Yet later the same write-up praises Priscah Jeptoo for deciding not to run NYC since she wasn't in top shape.
"Jeptoo, who is on the comeback trail from an injury in London, deserves big props for pulling out of the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon. A 46:59 15k is equivalent to 2:22:17 in the marathon according to McMillan. Clearly, Jeptoo could have come to New York, picked up a six-figure appearance fee, and not totally embarrassed herself. But she felt she wasn’t in good enough shape to defend her title in proper fashion.."
So....why the distinction between the two situations, which seem to be the same at first glance (athletes deciding to sit out since they're not in top shape)? Is it just because Jeptoo passed up a payday? The difference between professional and collegiate sports?
