For those who have ever taken an extended break from running, what have your experiences been like? For the last 2.5 years or so, I've battled a high hamstring injury. I've tried just about everything and thought I had turned the corner early this summer after a guided cortisone injection. It provided reprieve for a few months and allowed me to get back to fairly consistent training. Unfortunately, the same stubborn injury is back, and I'm completely dejected. Like some dope fiend, I fight each day to get in my fix, knowing that I'm probably just making it worse. Some days are okay and I'm placated; others are torturous. It's gotten to the point where sitting at work and walking around is quite bothersome and even sleeping is difficult. I feel like a retired, ex-NFL player hobbling around with chronic injuries, and I'm only 30. I'm thinking an extended break from running might do me good at this point, but I don't know how I'm going to mentally deal with this. Running and/or fitness has been such an integral part of my life for the last 17 years so I'm concerned as to how I could manage physically and mentally without it. Ultimately, I'd love for the break to do me so good and allow me to get back to what I love, but there aren't any guarantees with that either so that has me questioning such a drastic measure. I'm just paralyzed by decisions with this each day- run or don't run; should I swim or bike, but what if that is making it worse too; stretch or don't stretch; call the doc again; etc. Hamstring injury or otherwise- has anyone taken an extended break from running and how have you managed? Sorry this just a long-winded whine by me.
