I'm looking for advice/early season base build up for an attempt at breaking 3:50 in the 1500m. I'm starting up my training on Monday November 10th and am looking to be in peak shape from roughly April 15th-May 15th. From November 10th-late January, I will have control over all of my training as we don't have official workouts given to us during that time period.
Current Plan (broad overview):
Goals:
1500: 349.99
800: 1:51.99
-both goals are targeted at the outdoor season for april 15th-may 15th
Base Phase: build up 60-65mpw by 2nd week of December
-14 mile long run w/last 10 miles around 6 flat pace
-5 easier type days ranging from 6-9 miles (progressive cut down by feel with days I'm feeling good hitting 5:40-6:00 pace the last couple of miles)
-1 tempo run of 4-5 miles (5:20 pace) (slight cutdown: 5:30, 5:25, 5:20, 5:15, 5:10, or something like that)
-6x20 seconds strides 3-4 times a week during the middle miles of the run
-Core 4-5 times a week, weights 3-4 times per week (upper body only)
I am confused as to when I should begin incorporating speed/interval workouts. I will primarily be focused on racing during the end of march through to the middle of May, but will probably race 1 or 2 indoor races in mid February to tune up for the outdoor season as well.
I am primarily a middle distance runner and am an 800/1500 type rather than a 1500/5k. Because of this I am not a strong runner aerobically and need to work on that which is why this plan is pretty aerobically based.
Thanks in advance for any input and advice. It is greatly appreciated.
