Assuming that you want to run track/xc at a school and major in Engineering or Comp Sci.
George Mason would be a good alternate to VT. It's more of a commuter school compared to some other choices.
Aiming slightly higher, look into UVA in Charlottesville, they aren't as well known as an engineering school as VT, but Charlottesville would be a great place to go to college and train.
If William and Mary offers a Comp Sci major (but not engineering, that would be another good place to go to college and train. It's smaller and more selective with their admissions.
Look into NC State. They seemed to have relatively low out of state tuition for the area, and it's also a good school for engineering, and Raleigh is also a nice place to go to college and train.
Maryland is another big engineering school in the area, but they don't seem to be very strong with track/XC, and you may not want to live right in College Park is for the DC area.
A HS guidance counselor should help you refine a list of schools, and your coach should help you contact coaches about walking on a team.
