I bought a mattress for a little over $200. The delivery guys came and delivered it... The drive was less than 10 minutes from the store, and the act of parking, taking out the mattress, and putting it in my apt took all of about 4 minutes. They left and I didn't tip them, but now I think maybe I should. I was wondering what would be the appropriate amount. What do you guys think?
Kinda depends but I always have cash ready to go and probably would have tipped 20 bucks but if it really took only four minutes maybe only 10. I haven't paid $200 bucks for a mattress in at least 30 years so I'm not taking into consideration that you're buying a $200 mattress. The delivery guy isn't expecting a tip from the type of clientele that buys $200 mattresses.
What's harder to deliver, a mattress, or a sandwich? think about that. (ignore the gender of who is delivering)

If you pay someone to move house you might tip them for not breaking anything
Delivery on something like a mattress will be free or $10/20. You would be making the tip as much as the delivery charge

Right. I bought a cheap mattress because I might be moving in only about 6-9 months, so I didn't want to buy something expensive only to turn around and try and sell it in less than a year's time. I thought about stopping by the place I bought it from and tipping the guys $10 between them, but that almost seems like pity cash. It's still probably half an hour's wages for them though.

It's not pity cash. It's recognition of them doing a pain in the butt job, too. Would you say tipping a waitress 5-10 bucks is 'pity cash' too?

I got a couple of hundred dollars in two dollar bills from the bank and they go along with "have a cup of coffee on me".
Straight from the truck to the door that is fine but up stairs, butching stuff around corners or around halls and doorways get them more scratch.
Now getting them to remove and legally dump the old mattress is another financial conversation.

^ That's what I understood as well. They're not like waiters who are paid $4 an hour. Delivery drivers are paid based on delivery.
