Forget about the track and XC program; my son is considering attending Duke but most people he talks to hate the school. No one can articulate their hatred for Duke, however.
What are your reasons for hating Duke?

Because of their weasel men's basketball coach.

Um, no.
We hate Duke, NOT because they're a better version of us, but because they are a smug, entitled version of us. Aka a worse version of us.
They think they're superior, but couldn't get in HYP.
And, the reason they're attending Duke is probably because Mommy and Daddy sent them to private school, paid for tutors, pulled some strings, wrote a check, is on the board, etc.
If you're posting this on lrc, I assume that your child may be considering running at Duke. Don't. From a running perspective, Duke is the place running talent goes to die.
Better alternatives (assuming great academics, very good to great running)? Stanford, Michigan, UVA, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Wisco, UNC, Cal Berkley, UCLA, any Ivy (except Brown)...

Yes, this. Coach Kzyyzzzywwski's sideline demeanor is atrocious.
Spends more time bullying, grousing, intimidating officials than he spends coaching his guys.
He's a phony. The name recruits itself now. He gets great players and they play AAU ball.
Seeing them lose is one of life's joys.
Their fairy polack basketball coach.

Huh? I watch a lot of basketball and disagree with this. If the name recruits itself, it is because he has built the brand. If the name recruits itself, Duke football would always have a great team. Until recently, Duke was the bottom of the barrel in ACC football.
When I watch Duke games, most of the time Coach K is just sitting on the bench. Does he get in the refs ear if he thinks a bad call has been made? Of course. That is his job. He doesn't do it any more or less than most coaches. You know someone is desperate when yelling at a ref is worst thing a coach does.
For me, seeing a team like UNC, who has competed with teams in multiple sports while cheating for almost 2 decades - is what is wrong with today's collegiate athletes.

It works both ways. For example, Duke basketball is repeatedly voted as both the "most loved" and "most hated" team in America. I think when Duke basketball went through a stretch in the 1990's of winning so much, people came to hate them. In the beginning, people liked them - a good academic school also being able to field such a competitive team was appealing. Kind of like how everyone rooted for the underdog Butler University several years ago However, Americans only like so much success before they want to see whatever it is - a person, company, a team - taken down.
It seems like 90% of the hate for Duke originates from the hatred of the basketball team. Silly, but true.
If your son is considering Duke for academics, it is top rate.
Because some consider Prez Dick Brodhead a disaster?
Because some say he is a spiteful academic? (Hershel Parker controversy: cf.

)
Because some say he is arrogant and underhanded? (Duke in China controversy:

)
Because some say he is threatened by alpha males (Van de Velde controversy:

)
Because some believe that, due to his own insecurity vis-a-vis the "privileged," he stands ever-ready to throw his own students under very big buses (Duke Lacrosse scandal:

)
Maybe?

I hate them because it seems to be the school for spoiled rich kids.
I love Duke. I went there, and my parents met there while completing their PhDs.
It\'s a wonderful school with wonderful sports programs and a great culture. It seems that much of the distaste comes from UNC and those who are still sucking on their teat. Despite being fairly comparable schools, Duke seems to present itself as much more high caliber, so I think people are put off by the seemingly pretentious attitude of the school.
Duke is puke and Wake is fake but NC State is the one we hate!
The posts defending Duke in this thread are the very reason they are so disliked: "Others hate Duke because we are so high caliber, so successful, so wonderful, and others are jealous." Not really. Nearly every university has some element of this. Speaking for myself and others I know, we loathe Duke because you think you know why we dislike the culture as a whole but have no idea. Clueless! And yes, most of it started from the smug "f-bombing" basketball coach who talks of integrity and class yet f-bombs refs, players, and anyone else within earshot all game long. Excellent education, terrible representation!

Not sure if you were responding to me, but since you replied to my post directly i'll assume it was directed at me.
You either misread or misinterpreted my post. I didn't say Duke was better than other schools, or that other schools were jealous. I'll quote exactly what I wrote:
"Despite being fairly comparable schools, Duke seems to present itself as much more high caliber, so I think people are put off by the seemingly pretentious attitude of the school."
Duke SEEMS TO PRESENT ITSELF as more high caliber which can come across as PRETENTIOUS, DESPITE schools like UNC being comparable in nature. I'm not sure how you got "Duke is better and so other schools are jealous" out of that.
You were the last post, so I replied. It was not directed at you. That is why I started with "The posts defending Duke..." If the shoe fits wear it, otherwise ignore it. It is just one opinion anyway. I also drew some from previous threads on this topic and general experiences. The article tried to explain what others think and that is always challenging journalism, especially when they say things like a school and their representatives are disliked because they are a better version of ourselves. That should mend some fences, or fvcking fences as their basketball coach might utter from the side of his mouth.
Where do you live? I hate Duke because I went to Maryland. It's totally irrational and I've met some cool people who went to Duke. If you live in Maryland then most people hate Duke just for that reason.
Because they trash my bracket every year.
For me I would consider attending Duke solely for academic reasons. I hate them just like everyone else does but the name recognition, research potential, and selective nature probably do carry some weight. This is if I were attending for a math/engineering program. Liberal arts /etc. is pointless as it is, so go where ever you want. Sport-wise I would avoid the school at all costs.
Duke sucks
In the early 90's, Duke basketball was the team most neutral observers loved to root for. They were massive underdogs against a powerhouse UNLV team and beat them. Then the next year they beat Michigan's Fab Five, a team that made many people uncomfortable because they were so brash and "urban".
Eventually, Duke basketball became too big and too successful to be underdogs anymore. Gradually, they became hated because they were an elite academic institution that was beating up on other schools athletically as well.
The short answer is that haters gonna hate, whether it's Duke basketball, Oregon xc, LeBron James, etc.. If you hate someone or something for no other reason than because they are successful, then that's a you problem.
Best basketball watching experience ever. Was in Durham for business during March Madness. Went to a local Duke sports bar hangout. Got to watch the Dukies lose to Indiana, nothing sweeter than the sound of that silence...
as to why to hate Duke, it's simple. Their hoops team and coach are excellent and they always seem to get the breaks - either from favorable scheduling (when was the last time they played a first round game more than 100 miles from home?), seemingly biased refs, or a lucky bounce in a big game.
Admittedly, it really all boils down to jealousy.
