I'm talking about guys who ran, say, 15:30 min 5ks in HS but decided to not run on a college team.

Just about every good HSer from outside the US.
Roberto Aguayo
I know you said guys, but the girl who won D1 in Ohio in 2007, Claire Durkin, ran 17:10 I believe and went to Stanford but didn't run.
How about Richard Hertz from Holden, MA?

I looked him up and he's a football player at FSU..
Plenty.
A sub-0:50 400m runner
A 4:16 miler
A 4:21, 9:19, 15:35 guy.
We lose a lot of talent in the US.
The distance guys had poor coaching and low mileage (30 mpw) when in HS. It always made me mad they didn't want to try when I would bust my *ss for a 4:40.

One of the greats....Dick Hertz from Holden.
Peter Meindal? Not sure if that's how you spell his last name. He was a NY kid that ran 4:16 and 9:05 I believe. He placed well at Footlockers his senior year as well.
Went to Stanford. Ran sub 14:00 and sub 8:00 freshman year. Quit running after that...
I realize he DID go to college, but he was phenomenal and gave it up early.

I read he got his scholarship pulled.... and he ran a sub 14? That's unbelievable
HE RAN FASTER THAN THAT IIRC

Great story. In high school ran 19:44 as a soph, 18:02 jr and 17:10 senior.
She did run for one year at Stanford in 2011 and was fifth scorer at nationals.

2011 would have been her 5th year so I wonder if she missed it and regretted not running her first 4 years or if she was just looking for something to do. The girl had great turnover in HS.
