Damn Turkey day 5k crept up on me during a big base phase and now I have 4 more weeks to try and find some speed. My initial plan to begin some speed work a few weeks ago was detoured by a Rim2Rim2Rim trip.
Last few months have been all base work averaging 80-100 mpw, mostly aerobic in nature with some fartleks and tempo stuff sprinkled in. Hit the track this week with 10x400 at 5k pace with 200 recovery, didn't go too bad. Plan was to spend the next few weeks building that to 8x600, 6x800 and 5x1k; all at 5k pace and then taper slightly into race week. Mileage will stay around 100mpw with a hill session and a LR of 15 miles with some tempo mixed in. Also have a 10k this weekend.
Sound like a decent plan? I've never spent much time working on 5k stuff so feel slightly lost.
