Seems they have faded from the scene in recent years. Any ideas as to why? My understanding is they had a great high altitude training camp. And no, I do not think they doped.

Doping was a big deal, and it still is in today's culture in Mexican athletics.
The biggest reason is that they have no support or any form of organization. The country is completely disorganized when it comes to Athletics and creating training groups and/or fostering an environment to succeed.

The answer is clear and has been discussed many times. They differ from the East Africans, in that while yes, they are poor, many live at altitude, they just aren't dedicated enough. They just don't want it bad enough. There can be no other reason.
Only exception may be that their best runners are taken away to play soccer.

Not only that but I kno for a fact that Andres was offered to NYC last year to commemorate his 20 year anniversary championship there but was turned down. Now they have German Silva? Everyone knows if Espinosa had run in 1994 Silva would never have won.
Silva brought much to us but Espinosa produced the records that are still valid.

Running isn't a popular sport in Mexico so I think the emergence of Barrios, Garcia, Espinosa was just a perfect storm of talent emerging at once. Without a popular base, everything has to be right for runners of that caliber to emerge -- similar to things in the States. We get eruptions of talent now and then in different events, then it subsides. We were strong in the marathon when Hall was in his prime, now nothing. A few years ago only Webb was a homegrown medal threat. Now there's Rupp, Centro, a lot of women middle distance runners.
Why would you run on the track when you can make more money running across the border with baggies of heroin stuffed in your anus?
The third place finisher in this year's Houston Marathon was from Mexico City and he ran a 2:08 which is faster than anything an American has been running lately.
