Ran my first marathon this weekend, Marine Corps Marathon, and was really happy with how I was doing. Ran perfectly even splits (7:35-7:40) until mile 21 and was in the top 60 women runners at the 30k. From a leg fatigue perspective I felt tired but could push through it - I was even thinking about picking up the pace at that point. Then I had an epic fail at mile 21 - I got extremely nauseous, started vomiting, and sat down on the curb dry heaving for 10 minutes. I stumbled/jogged my way towards the finish line, having to sit down again every mile or so.
I'd like to redeem myself at some point, and I want to avoid this happening again. On top of it ruining my time, I felt like I had the worst hangover of my life for about 2 hours.
I'm looking to see if anyone has some insight into what went wrong.
I'm a 32 year old female who running more seriously about a year ago (prior to that a casual jogger). Stated training for the marathon in July. Ran a half marathon in 1:32 in September and set my marathon goal at 3:20ish. Peaked at 50 miles a week: long run Sundays (marathon pace every other week), tempo run tuesdays, and interval workout thursdays. Ate gel and drank water at regular intervals on my long runs. Drank a cup of coffee before runs but didnt eat. Never had nausea problems.
On race day I was pretty worried about running out of glycogen and ate a gel every 30 minutes, so I'd had 5 by the time I crashed. I drank water at aid stations.
I have 2 theories:
1) The one I want to believe: I overdid it on gels and took in too much electrolytes for not enough water.
2) I was overly aggressive with my pace, by body shunted blood from my GI tract and completely rebelled against the marathon.
Any ideas on what happened? How can I train differently? Any suggestions on nutrition and hydration?
Thanks,
Jessica
