Hello Everyone-
My 10 year old daughter took up an interest in running this Spring. I would say over the past 6 months she has run maybe an average of 1-2x per week. When she does run she runs 1 or 2 miles each run (except 3-5K's). Only once has she decided to run a longer run of 4 miles. Me and my son are runners and she jumped in a 5k in the Spring and ran 27:45 off no training and has raced two times since then and best time is 24:12.
She is a nationally ranked tennis player and I'm so happy that is interested in something else. My concern is I have read so many stories of younger girls burning out so early in running. I really like the fact that she begs me to run and do races and is mine/son biggest supporters as we are for her in tennis.
My question is should I just keep it at 1-2 times per week for the next few years for her. I have seen in my tennis coaching career that the biggest thing that happens to girls once they hit high school and start dropping out like flies is "social life" and there interest changes. I know that in regards to running that girls can come in early and do well and fizzle. If she continues in the next few years any suggestions to avoid this fizzle?
I just want her to be happy. She wants to run more but I just am weary about it. So I'll take any advice I can get.
