I'm conflicted because I have a lot of good stuff to say about myself. I feel that putting the menial job on there just wastes space, but if I don't put it on there, I will have a work gap of about five months. I'm not sure if employers will understand this means I likely had some other jobs not worth mentioning or if they will assume I was unemployed. I'm just not sure what to do.
Any advice on this?
I'd put it on if it is recent. Some employers will see a gap, say "I don't want to hire the kind of guy who sits on his butt for five months at a time," and throw your resume in the reject pile before you've had a chance to explain. Better to show that you've been doing something with your time, even if that something is mundane.

Why don't you just say you travelled over that time? That would be far better
do you need to put the months you worked every job? you could always just put the years and not list your BS job. when they see your 2nd to last job as 2012-2014 (or whatever it was) they won't know if you left it 5 months ago or last week. no point in giving them extra information that they don't need and didn't ask for
If your work history is so short that you have to list months, put it on there.
If you have a 3 or 4 jobs you only spent 2 years at, put it on there.
If you have a couple 2 year jobs and a 5 year job or a history that is longer, you can most likely leave it off.
How long ago was it? A gap in year jobs that occurred more than 5 years ago you can likely leave it off.
What type of job are you applying for? If you know the first thing they are going to do is to ask you to fill out an application that you will have to put it on, put it on there.
