He did it with the help of Will Leer and a windy day that favored the good runners. We'll see what happens tomorrow.
Here's what he said a half-hour ago:

"Years battling the infamous Lower Hutt gales at Shandon Golf Course have paid off with my unexpected lead of the speedgolf world champs after day 1 at Oregon's Bandon Dunes. Winds gusted upwards of 50mph at times, wrecking havoc on everyone's game on these brutally slick greens. I shot 97 in 42 minutes, and only one person broke 90. Running was the difference today, as most carried a bag (which I didnt), which acted like a small parachute, dragging in the gusts.
The organisers decided to amend the tournament to two seperate competitions with today's round being a mini prize purse, and tomorrow being the official world champs. This was due to many experiencing the ball rollong on the greens as they set up for their putts.
Crazy fun out there today and extra fun and special to have good friend, Will Leer, and his girlfriend, Aisha, running alongside me as ball spotters.
Tomorrow is forecast for only a light breeze, so totally different ball games so should be interesting to see what happens."
