The easiest way to achieve the "feel" of the 14.5" barrel is to buy just the upper receiver with the 14.5" barrel online, which doesn't require going through an FFL. Then just buy a Colt or equivalent stripped lower at the LGS (or order one online and have it shipped to the LGS), then buy an LPK and build your own lower receiver. That's the way I've done it a few times, it's as easy as pie, and I'm in no way a mechanical guy.
Not arguing with you, and I know the laws.
You could go that route unless you want to one stop shop. The difference between the 14.5 and 16 is negligible. I have an NFA 10" that is distinctly different than my 16" and even 18" barrel uppers. That is the beauty of the AR15 system, one lower an multiple uppers.
I would just buy a standard 6920 and multiple uppers over time.
1 upper is not enough.
Before you know it you will have 4-5 uppers, suppressors, and thousands of $ in optics stashed in a safe.
Been there and doing that.
I highly recommend an NFA Trust too.
