This sure brings back memories. I got to run in the Utah State Cross Country Championships just once in high school, during my junior year. I placed 3rd in 3A behind Seniors Wayne Pinto of Davis High School and John Allsen. Pinto was a three-time State champion. We ran a slightly different course than they run today. The next year I was badly injured and had to watch from the sidelines. Here's a pretty good video of the race, where you can see much of the course and some of the hills the runners have to deal with. Conner Mantz ran a really gutsy race while injured after taking a week and half off running prior to the race. Mantz had a nice lead with 400 to go, but Josh Collins hung on right to the end and seemed to surprise Mantz with a big kick. Mantz fell down and finished 2nd. You have to admire both of these young men, and both were humble and gracious in victory (Collins) and defeat (Mantz) in their post-race interviews. These guys make us old former Utah high schoolers proud. I'm really looking forward to how they do in Footlocker West and hopefully the Footlocker Nationals.
